WELCOME TO MY HONORS PORTFOLIO
Sophomore Year:
Stepping Into My Own

Sophomore year brought unexpected challenges. After the excitement of freshman year, I hit what many call a “sophomore slump.” I found myself questioning my direction, feeling the weight of responsibilities, and trying to rediscover the motivation that came so naturally the year before. But what felt like a setback became a setup for clarity, confidence, and community.
Despite the emotional setbacks, I knew I didn’t want to stay stuck. I started to lean deeper into the spaces that inspired me. One of the most impactful decisions I made was joining Sisters Impacting Sisters (SIS), not just as a member, but as a student leader serving as Secretary. SIS became a safe space, a sisterhood, and a platform where I could uplift others while learning more about myself. Leading among powerful Black women reminded me that I wasn’t alone, and that my voice mattered.
Professionally, I expanded my skill set by working in marketing for the College of Education, Criminal Justice, and Human Services (CECH). This position allowed me to bring creativity into my work, contribute to a professional environment, and represent a college that reflects my passions and purpose. It was also my first step into marketing as a true career path, something I had only begun to explore before.
At the same time, I continued to grow as a writer and storyteller through The News Record, writing with more confidence and covering stories that reflected my interests and community. I also took steps to expand my network, getting involved with the National Association of Black Journalists (NABJ) and connecting with professionals and students who looked like me and shared my drive.
This year wasn’t easy—but it was necessary. Through every dip, I found a reason to rise. I stopped shrinking, started speaking up, and found power in my presence. My sophomore year reminded me that growth doesn’t always feel good, but it always pushes you toward purpose. And now, with a clearer sense of who I am and what I bring to the table, I’m ready for what’s next.
