Transitions 2023-24:
A Gateway to Growth

As a Black out-of-state student, participating in Transitions, a mentorship program through UC’s African American Cultural and Resource Center (AACRC), was a transformative experience during my freshman year. Transitions provided not only a sense of belonging but also the academic and social support I needed to navigate life at a predominantly white institution.
Through the program, I was introduced to the AACRC, which quickly became a home away from home. I found a productive rhythm by studying in the Center’s quiet study room and gaining inspiration from the Harambe Room, where images of Black trailblazers constantly remind me of my purpose and potential.
Now, I’ve returned to the AACRC as a student leader through my involvement in Sisters Impacting Sisters (SIS)—first as Secretary and currently as Social Media and Marketing Director. This role has allowed me to give back to the community that once welcomed me, while continuing to grow as a leader and support other Black women on campus.
Transitions has been a cornerstone of my UC experience. It showed me the importance of campus resources, not only for academic success but for personal development. This program encouraged me to explore other support centers—such as Counseling and Psychological Services, the Women’s Center, and Student Wellness—and inspired me to pursue new opportunities like the UC Honors Program, all of which contribute to my well-rounded college journey.
