SBT 2024:
A Journey Through History & Identity

During Spring Break 2024, I had the opportunity to participate in a transformative cultural and educational bus tour through the South, organized in partnership with UC’s African American Cultural and Resource Center (AACRC). As a first-year student, I was initially nervous to join, not knowing what to expect. But from Cincinnati to Memphis, Birmingham, Houston, Atlanta, and back, I experienced one of the most impactful journeys of my college career.
We visited key historical landmarks such as the Lorraine Motel and Museum, Beale Street, Little Rock Central High School, the Houston Rodeo, and The Legacy Museum. These sites brought African American history to life in a way textbooks never could. As a young Black woman, I was deeply moved by the resilience, creativity, and courage embedded in our history—much of which is often overlooked in traditional education.
Beyond the academic enrichment, the tour allowed me to build meaningful connections with UC students, staff, and alumni through shared experiences, deep conversations, and reflection. The program challenged me to see myself not just as a student, but as a leader and lifelong learner. It also inspired me to enroll in an African American History course and pursue leadership roles on campus, including serving as Secretary and now Social Media Director for Sisters Impacting Sisters (SIS).
This experience left a lasting imprint on my identity and goals. Especially during a time when DEI efforts and historical education are under threat, this journey reaffirmed the importance of protecting and uplifting these sacred spaces and stories.
